About Iowa HVAC Guide
Iowa HVAC Guide is a small, independent guide to home heating, cooling and HVAC companies in Iowa. It started in Waukee and the Des Moines metro and covers Iowa's larger cities, from Ames and Cedar Rapids to the Quad Cities, Sioux City and Council Bluffs. It is run by Kasey, a Waukee resident. We are not a heating and cooling contractor or a utility. We do not inspect or repair equipment, and we do not sell HVAC products or leads.
How we write our guides
- Sourced, not guessed. Facts come from public sources such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the U.S. Department of Energy, ENERGY STAR, the Iowa Department of Inspections, Appeals, and Licensing (DIAL), the Iowa Attorney General, the National Weather Service, MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy's own program and safety pages, and each city's own permit pages. Every guide lists its sources at the bottom with the date we checked them.
- Practical and local. We write for homeowners in Waukee, West Des Moines, Des Moines, Ankeny, Urbandale and the other Iowa cities we cover.
- Safety first. We only suggest safe homeowner checks. We never suggest opening a furnace, relighting equipment or touching gas piping. If you smell gas or a carbon monoxide alarm sounds, we tell you to get out first.
- No invented numbers. We do not publish prices, ratings, reviews or statistics unless they come from a cited public source, and we do not quote utility rebate amounts, which change often. We link to the utility instead.
Listing criteria
Our local HVAC companies page lists heating and cooling companies that serve the Iowa towns we cover. Every listing follows these rules:
- Checked on the company's own website. We add a company only after reading its own working site, not a review site, directory or lead-generation page. Each listing links to the pages we checked and shows the date we checked them.
- Real, local, identifiable business. The site has to identify the company and say it offers heating or cooling service in one of our Iowa towns. We skip template sites, out-of-state companies with no Iowa presence shown, call-routing pages, dead sites and businesses without their own website.
- Only what they publish. Phone numbers and addresses appear only if the company shows them on its own site. Services are taken from the company's own wording. A company is listed under a town only if its site names that town or shows an office there.
- Registration status, never a guess. We search every company in the State of Iowa's list of active construction contractor registrations. For HVAC businesses, DIAL says registration comes through a joint application with the Plumbing and Mechanical Systems Board contractor license. We did not separately look up each board license, so verify it yourself in the board's public license portal. Each listing says registration found (with the number) when we found a clear, active match, no active registration found when we did not, or not confirmed when the result was unclear, with a short note. "Not found" may simply mean the company registered under a different legal name, so check yourself.
- No rankings, reviews, prices or paid placement. Nobody pays to be listed and there are no featured spots.
- Re-checked regularly. We aim to re-check listings about once a month and remove companies whose sites no longer support the listing.
Listings are informational, not endorsements. Always check a contractor's registration, insurance and references yourself before hiring. Is your business missing or wrong? Contact us to request a correction, addition or removal.
