Iowa HVAC Rebates: How MidAmerican and Alliant Instant Discounts Work
If you're replacing a furnace, air conditioner or heat pump in Iowa, your utility may knock money off the price. That's not a coupon you clip. It's an instant discount built into what qualifying contractors pay for the equipment. Many homeowners never hear about it unless they ask.
This guide explains how the programs at Iowa's two big investor-owned utilities, MidAmerican Energy and Alliant Energy, work, based on their own program pages. We deliberately don't list dollar amounts. Utilities set and change them every program year, and they can end programs when funds run out. Always check the utility's current page, linked below, before you count on a discount.
MidAmerican Energy
MidAmerican's Home Discounts and Rebates page splits its offers into two kinds.
Instant Discounts. MidAmerican says you "save money right away when you purchase equipment from qualified dealers and installers." It lists qualifying models of:
- Air-source heat pumps (including cold-climate models)
- Central air conditioners
- Ductless split heat pumps (including cold-climate models)
- Geothermal heat pumps
- Heat pump water heaters
- Natural gas furnaces
How it works, in MidAmerican's words: the program "incentivizes local distributors to stock energy-efficient equipment." Instant Discounts are "only available through participating providers," and the discount is automatically deducted from the purchase price, with no paperwork needed. MidAmerican says to ask your preferred HVAC contractor whether they participate, or use its provider search tool on the same page.
Rebates (after purchase). Separate mail-in style rebates cover certain ENERGY STAR certified items installed in the home, such as smart thermostats, heat pump water heaters, air purifiers and some appliances. You apply online with an itemized receipt.
Key MidAmerican rules
From MidAmerican's Iowa Residential Qualifications and Conditions page for 2026:
- You must be a MidAmerican residential customer in its Iowa service territory, and MidAmerican must provide the primary electricity or natural gas to the equipment.
- Equipment must be new, installed at your home, and not bought for resale.
- Equipment must be purchased, installed and operating between January 1 and December 31, 2026.
- Instant Discounts can't be combined with any other MidAmerican rebate or incentive, including its prescriptive rebates.
- Rebate applications are due within 90 days of the dealer invoice or by December 31, 2026, whichever comes first.
- Incentives are first-come, first-served and offered until funds run out or the end of the year.
- You're responsible for making sure the installed equipment meets all applicable codes. That's another reason to use a contractor who pulls the permit.
- MidAmerican says it doesn't guarantee that efficient equipment will lower your usage or bills, and doesn't endorse any manufacturer or product.
Alliant Energy
Alliant's Instant Discounts program (Iowa) works on the same idea. Alliant says you get your instant discount at the point of purchase: it works with participating distributors to bring down the cost of qualified equipment, "so there is no need to fill out paperwork." All you have to do is use dealers that buy qualified equipment from participating distributors.
Alliant's residential heating and cooling list includes:
- Air-source heat pumps and cold-climate air-source heat pumps
- Central air conditioners
- Natural gas furnaces
- Geothermal heat pumps
- Ductless mini-splits and cold-climate ductless mini-splits
- Electric heat pump water heaters
Alliant's advice is simple: "Before you buy, ask your dealer if they work with distributors that participate in our Instant Discounts program." Its page also has a "Find a trade ally" tool for finding contractors who work with participating distributors, a downloadable residential HVAC flyer, detailed equipment qualifications, and the program's terms and conditions.
How to actually get the discount
- Find out which utility serves your home. Check your bill.
- Read the current program page (linked above) for the equipment you're considering. Note the program year and any efficiency requirements in the detailed qualifications.
- Ask every contractor in writing: "Do you participate in [utility]'s Instant Discounts program, and is the discount shown on this quote?" Because the discount is applied before you see the price, ask them to show it as a line item so you can compare quotes fairly.
- Get the exact model number on the quote and check it against the utility's qualifications and ENERGY STAR's product finder.
- Watch the deadlines. MidAmerican's 2026 terms require equipment to be installed and operating by December 31, 2026.
- Don't double-dip by accident. MidAmerican says Instant Discounts can't be combined with its other rebates. Ask before you assume.
Other ways to save on heating bills
Discounts help once. Habits help every month. These come from the U.S. Department of Energy's consumer guide:
- Set back the thermostat. The DOE says you can save about 1% on heating bills for each degree you set back over an eight-hour period, and as much as 10% on heating and cooling by setting back when you're asleep or away.
- Keep up with maintenance. The DOE says a regular maintenance schedule can cut heating and cooling costs by 10% or more and extend equipment life.
- Seal ducts and air-seal the house. ENERGY STAR recommends home sealing and duct sealing alongside a new furnace for better performance.
ENERGY STAR's product pages also include a Rebate Finder where you can enter your ZIP code to see partner-sponsored rebates on certified products.
A note on tax credits
Federal tax credit rules for heating equipment have changed in recent years, and some government pages haven't caught up. We don't summarize them here. Ask a tax professional and check IRS guidance for the year you install.
Frequently asked questions
Do I have to apply for MidAmerican's instant discount?
No. MidAmerican says Instant Discounts are automatically deducted from the purchase price when you buy through a participating provider, with no paperwork needed. Its after-purchase rebates, such as for smart thermostats, do require an online application.
How much is the MidAmerican or Alliant furnace discount?
Amounts are set by each utility and can change during the year, so we don't publish them. Check MidAmerican's Home Discounts and Rebates page or Alliant's Instant Discounts (Iowa) page for current figures.
Does my contractor have to participate?
Yes. MidAmerican says Instant Discounts are only available through participating providers. Alliant says to use dealers who buy qualified equipment from participating distributors. Ask before you sign.
Can I combine MidAmerican rebates?
MidAmerican's 2026 conditions say Instant Discounts cannot be combined with any other rebate or incentive program, including its prescriptive rebates.
What if I'm served by a municipal utility or co-op?
Their programs are separate from MidAmerican's and Alliant's. Contact your utility directly. Its name is on your bill.
